Diff Anything
Find what changed between two versions of a spreadsheet, document, folder or code file
Forpeople who check revised files, and developers who review changes Mac, Windows, Command line
Back from the supplier comes the price list "with a few small corrections", none of them marked anywhere in its 1,800 rows. Diff Anything lays the two versions next to each other and shows every difference, in documents or a whole folder of photos as well. The privacy section says the app needs no account and uses neither analytics nor a cloud service, so compared files stay on your computer.
Spreadsheets are matched row by row, so an inserted row shows up as one addition. This also works when one side is an Excel file and the other comes from Numbers. Word files are compared by text and formatting, PDFs either as text or page by page as pictures, and images get overlay, swipe, blink, heatmap and changed-pixel views.
For code there is a plain line-by-line view and a Smart Diff mode, which the site says knows 117 languages. Developers can run comparisons from the command line and from Git. A build check can fail when a change to an API description would break the programs that rely on it.
Good fit if you…
- receive edited spreadsheets or documents and need to see what someone changed
- want to compare files without uploading them to an online diff site
