Recessed Light Calculator
Work out how many ceiling can lights a room needs and where to cut the holes
Forhomeowners sketching a first lighting plan Web
Each recessed light needs its own hole in the ceiling, so a wrong count stays up there for years. This calculator works out the count and the spacing for a rectangular room. You pick the room type, which sets a target brightness, and enter the fixture's lumens and beam angle. A 2D plan then marks each light with its distance from two walls.
In automatic mode the tool looks for a full grid that meets the brightness target and a spacing limit. This can add lights to the first estimate. Ready-made patterns keep a fixed count, for example one row for a hallway or a ring of eight around an open centre. Fixture figures come from the packaging or from a short list of checked models.
The maths follows the lumen method, a common way to estimate the average brightness of a room. The about page lists its formulas with worked examples. The site calls every result a planning estimate for general lighting under a flat ceiling, to be confirmed by an installer or electrician. It also says room inputs stay on your own device.
Good fit if you…
- are planning recessed lights for a kitchen, living room or hallway
- want a light plan with measurements to show an installer
