Data Import Mapper
Clean up a spreadsheet before it goes into new software, and see every row that fails
Forsmall teams moving records from spreadsheets into a new system Web
Most of the trouble in moving an old customer list into new software comes from small things: blank email fields, or the same client entered twice. The import screen then reports them one at a time, while a check in Data Import Mapper finds them all before the move. After loading the file, you choose and rename columns, then set rules for empty cells, formats, allowed values and repeats.
Rows that break a rule are set aside so you can read each one, and the cleaned file holds only the rows that pass. The checks are strict: dates must be written as YYYY-MM-DD, and numbers cannot carry currency symbols. With an Excel file, only the first worksheet is read.
Next to the clean data come the column map, for reuse on the next file, and starter code that repeats the same checks inside an app. The site calls that code a tested starting point for a developer to connect and extend.
The source is published under the MIT licence. It comes in one kit with three other browser tools from the same site, plus tests and examples for running them on your own machine. The file you check is read inside the browser, and the site says it goes nowhere else unless you share a download yourself.
Good fit if you…
- are about to load a customer or product list into a new system
- want a developer to reuse your import rules in code
