Halfway through turning a photo of the family dog into two thousand plastic beads, you run out of brown. In PixelSkein, the photo becomes a bead grid in the 95 Perler Midi colors, at a width in beads and a color limit you set. The result lists each Perler color code with its bead count and works out how many 29 by 29 pegboards the design will cover.

Single stray beads, which crafters call confetti, force extra color changes, and a cleanup setting folds them into the colors around them at a strength you pick. Colors are matched the way the eye sees them, a choice the site credits with more natural faces and skies. Screen colors differ from real plastic, so the site asks you to check skin and hair shades against your own beads first.

PixelSkein comes in seven languages. Its finished grid downloads as a PNG, and the same engine also runs makers for other bead brands and for cross stitch with DMC floss.

Good fit if you…

  • want a bead shopping list before you start a fuse-bead picture
  • make cross-stitch, crochet or knitting charts from your own photos
