A shrug or a joke about the lottery is the standard answer to the question of when you could stop working for good. UntilFire turns your earnings and monthly savings into an estimated year when a job becomes optional. Followers of the FIRE movement, short for financial independence, retire early, call this the freedom date. Sliders then show how far it moves when you save more or spend less, and the result names one next step.

Separate calculators answer smaller questions, like how big a portfolio has to be under the 4% rule, a common guide to how much you can withdraw each year. Another one compares your net worth with US households of the same age. A city comparison ranks hundreds of places in the US and abroad by typical household spending and shows the year each would free you for your numbers. A learning section explains the basics, starting with what FIRE means.

The site calls its figures illustrative projections built on assumed market growth of about 7% a year, and it points people who need advice to a licensed financial adviser. With an account, the plan is saved and progress can be tracked over time.

Bank and brokerage accounts connect through Plaid. According to the privacy page, only a transaction's description and amount go to an outside AI service that sorts it into a category. All data can be exported, and the profile page deletes the account.

Good fit if you…

  • want a rough date for when your savings could cover your living costs
  • want to compare how long the same savings would last in different cities
