ScanChess
Photograph a chess scoresheet or board and get a game file you can analyze
Forover-the-board players and the coaches who run chess clubs Web, Browser extension
After a club game or tournament, the moves sit on a handwritten scoresheet, in writing that is hard to read even for the person who wrote it. Typing them into a chess program one by one takes a long time. From a photo of the sheet, ScanChess builds a game file that chess software can open. Every move is checked against the rules and shown next to the original photo, so you can compare and correct it before export.
Games come out as PGN, the standard format chess software uses for whole games. A board photo, screenshot or book diagram gives a FEN instead, which records a single position in one line. The reader handles algebraic notation (e4, Nf3) and one game per upload, spread over several pages if needed. Older descriptive notation like P-K4 is not converted.
The accuracy page reports a small test of six sheets, with 181 of 204 moves read right on the four algebraic ones. It also notes that none of the 24 mistakes on those sheets was flagged as uncertain, and it advises checking every move against the paper.
Scanned games can go to the Stockfish engine, and an AI coach explains what the analysis found. For clubs and coaches, round scanning sorts the pages of a whole round by game and assigns them to players from a pairing list. Reading photos needs an account, while 23 smaller tools, for example a PGN viewer and a board editor, run in the browser without one.
Good fit if you…
- keep your tournament games on paper and want them in a chess database
- coach a club and collect a whole round of scoresheets at once
