A website's tab icon is easy to spot and hard to save in a usable size. Right-clicking the tab offers nothing, and the favicon.ico you track down is often 16 pixels wide. On FaviconDL you paste a web address and get a list of every icon the site publishes. It checks the page code and the app manifest, where many sites keep their larger icons.

Apps that show many site icons can call an API instead, with no key or account needed. It answers with the best icon as an image, so the API link works inside a web page. In JSON it names the source and up to eight other candidates. When a site blocks the request or has no icon, the answer comes from Google's or DuckDuckGo's icon service and may be a generic globe.

The tools page, which the site says works in your browser, turns your own logo into favicon files in several sizes, with the HTML tags to paste into your pages. A batch mode fetches icons for up to 100 domains at once. The extractor runs on the maker's servers, so it reaches only public websites and never localhost or pages behind a login.

Good fit if you…

  • need a sharp copy of a site's icon for a bookmark list, dashboard or slide
  • want to show site icons in your own app without signing up for an API
