Track down a four-letter .com nobody owns, or catch one the day it drops
Forfounders and domain investors hunting for very short .com names Web, API
Back in the nineties, the .com for your four-letter startup name went to someone who has renewed it every year since. Every so often an owner forgets to pay and a short name slips back onto the market. dcs4 tracks every .com made of four letters or digits. The site counts close to 1.68 million combinations and says each one is re-checked against the .com registry every day.
In the search box, a question mark stands for one character and an asterisk for any run of them. Typing qu?? lists open names that start with "qu". Results can be sorted by a brand score, an in-house measure of how easy a name is to say. Names that are still taken show when they expire and an estimated drop date, the day the registry releases the name to anyone.
You can put a watch on a pattern and get an email when a matching name nears its drop. Sniping goes one step further: dcs4 tries to register the name for you through the registrar Spaceship at the moment it drops. The terms call each snipe an attempt, because other services compete for the same names.
AI assistants can search the index through a JSON API and an MCP server, a connector format these assistants understand. Only four-character .com names are covered, with no hyphens and no other endings.
Good fit if you…
- want a short .com for a new brand and can live with a digit in it
- follow expiring short names and want to grab one when it drops
